Culture, Coaching, and Growth: Paul’s Blueprint for Today’s Financial Advisor

At 1847Financial, success isn’t just about numbers—it’s about people, culture, and alignment. We sat down with Paul Rodden, Managing Principal of our Kansas City, Dallas-Fort Worth, and Houston headquarters, to get his perspective on what defines the ideal financial professional, how 1847Financial supports advisor growth, and why culture matters more than ever. With over 15 years in the industry and a legacy of leadership, Paul shares candid insights for financial professionals considering their next move.

Q: Paul, tell us a little about your journey in financial services.
I’ve been in the industry for over 15 years, and it’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I’m a second-generation advisor—both my parents were in the business, and I had the privilege of learning from them at a young age. Over the years, I’ve worn many hats—personal producer, sales manager, co-general agent—and now I’m fortunate to serve as Managing Principal at 1847Financial. Joining this firm was another one of my best decisions. The culture here reminds me of what I valued early in my career—where you're treated like a person, not a number.

Q: What makes 1847Financial stand out from other firms?
It comes down to three things: dynamic culture, strong local leadership, and top-tier resources. We recognize that every advisor is at a different stage in their career, so we tailor our support to help them reach that next level—whether they're building their book or transitioning into an owner/non-operator role. Our mission, vision, and culture are aligned, and that consistency is something advisors notice right away.

Q: How does 1847Financial partner with advisors to help them grow?
We meet advisors where they are. Sometimes that means daily support with marketing, case design, or business development. Other times, it’s helping them grow a team or recruit talent. Our financial professionals are our clients, and we’re here to remove road blocks, provide resources, recognize achievements, and ensure they feel supported—every single day.

Q: What qualities do you look for in an ideal financial professional?
Someone who’s a holistic planner and believes in protection-first strategies, is coachable—and simply put, not a jerk. Talent matters, but culture fit is critical. We’re building something special, and we want professionals who elevate that environment, not disrupt it.

Q: How do you ensure the firm stays ahead of the curve?
By staying a student of the business. We’re always learning - keeping up with best practices, leveraging technology, and understanding both local and national competition. Recruitment and re-recruitment happen daily, and if you’re not evolving, you’re falling behind. It's about evolution, not revolution.

Q: What mistakes do financial professionals make when changing firms?
Overpromising and underdelivering is a big one—both on their end and the firm’s. Some advisors expect too much without being willing to adapt. That’s why cultural alignment is so important from the start. We’re upfront about who we are and who we’re not—we’re not the right fit for everyone, and that’s okay.

Q: What’s been your biggest success in this career?
Helping talented individuals—whether career changers or advisors struggling elsewhere—build thriving businesses here. Seeing them succeed, help clients, and grow beyond what they thought possible is incredibly rewarding.

Q: Any advice for advisors considering a move?
Trust your gut. Make sure your vision aligns with the firm’s mission. If it doesn’t, no amount of compensation or perks will make it the right fit.

Q: Outside of work, what keeps you busy?
Family comes first. I’ve got two kids, 10 and 12, and when I’m not traveling, I’m coaching their sports teams or playing hockey. I’m a big Bruins fan!

Final Thoughts?
Stay true to yourself. Say what you mean and mean what you say. In this business, trust and follow-through are everything. If we focus on supporting the right people, staying aligned with our mission, and continuously evolving, success takes care of itself.
