Life Insurance's Lasting Impact: Three Stories From Financial Professionals

Life Insurance Awareness Month is a reminder that life insurance is not really about policies, premiums, or death benefits. It is about the people we care about, the financial security that supports them, and the lasting impact we leave behind.

Three 1847Financial financial professionals shared personal stories that continue to shape the conversations they have with clients today.

The Difference Preparation Can Make

Sean Moran, MST, CKA®, AAMS®
Financial Advisor, Red Barn Financial

Financial professional Sean Moran has seen firsthand how life insurance can change the outcome for a family.

One story involved a client in his 40s who died unexpectedly in a car accident. He had a young son and had put $1 million of life insurance coverage in place.

The death benefit provided financial support for his family and helped ensure his son was cared for in the years ahead. It also allowed the family to remain in their home and maintain financial stability. According to Sean, the coverage gave the family options and helped preserve the life the family had built.

Sean has also witnessed the opposite situation.

He recalls a teacher whose husband was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. Without sufficient life insurance, the family faced financial challenges in addition to the emotional toll of the diagnosis. After he passed away, his wife could not afford the family home on a teacher's salary. She ultimately moved in with relatives along with their three children.

What remains with Sean most is not only the financial impact, but the regret he saw during the husband's final months. Rather than focusing on time with his family, he worried about the financial burden they would face after he was gone.

Those stories also influenced Sean's own planning. When his wife experienced a sudden and unexpected heart condition several years ago, she already had life insurance coverage in place. Without it, obtaining coverage afterward would likely have been far more difficult.

"Get it before you need it" has become one of the most important lessons Sean shares with clients.

A Small Premium, A Life-Changing Outcome

Michael McClelland, CFP®, RICP®
Managing Partner, McClelland Financial Services
Red Bank, NJ

For financial professional Michael McClelland, one story illustrates how even modest coverage can make a profound difference.

In 2016, he worked with a single mother raising a young daughter on a limited budget. Together, they put in place a $350,000 term policy that fit comfortably within what she could afford.

Several years later, she was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer and passed away.

The death benefit was directed into a trust for her daughter. Those proceeds provided financial support through high school and college, helping create opportunities that might otherwise have been out of reach. She has plans to become a doctor.

For Michael, the story serves as a reminder that life insurance is about more than replacing income. It can help preserve a child's future and provide support when a family needs it.

The Legacy She Never Expected

Matt Cole
Founder/Principal, Living Legacy Planning
Brentwood, TN
livinglegacyplanning.us  |  linkedin.com/in/mattcole-livinglegacy/

For financial professional Matt Cole, the lesson came from his own family.

After his mother-in-law moved in with his family during the final years of her life, they discovered an old term life insurance policy while sorting through her paperwork. She had largely forgotten about the policy, and it was nearing expiration. Fortunately, it was kept in force through the annual renewal. When she later passed away, the death benefit provided more than financial support. It became part of the legacy she was able to leave behind.

The proceeds were used to renovate the family's kitchen, a meaningful tribute to someone who loved bringing people together through home-cooked southern meals. For Matt's family, the gift was not measured by the size of the policy. It was the knowledge that she was able to leave something behind for the people she loved.

Before her passing, Matt showed his mother-in-law his daughter's life insurance policy and how the coverage could grow over her lifetime. The conversation deeply moved her. She wondered how different her family's future might have been if a similar policy had been started when she was young. While the benefit she ultimately left behind was modest, it gave her comfort knowing she had made a meaningful contribution to the people she loved. For Matt, it is a powerful reminder that life insurance is about more than dollars and cents. It is about the opportunity to leave a legacy.

The Common Thread
Every family's story is different, but the message is the same: life insurance can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those left behind.

For financial professionals, these stories are a reminder that behind every policy is a story still being written. The work you do today can have a meaningful impact for years to come.

During Life Insurance Awareness Month, take the opportunity to connect with clients and have conversations that could make a difference for their families in the future.
