In financial services, having a versatile, dedicated team member can be a game-changer. Nicole Morrison, who serves as Director of New Business, Executive Assistant and Recruiting Support Specialist at 1847Financial – Akron, OH and Pittsburgh, PA Headquarters, knows this well. Starting as a receptionist, Nicole’s path has been defined by growth, adaptability and a deep commitment to helping financial professionals succeed. In this Q&A, she shares insights from her multifaceted role, the value of fostering genuine connections and what sets her firm apart for those seeking a fulfilling and dynamic career.
What initially drew you to a career in financial services?
I was younger and really looking for something career-based where I could grow and find stability. When I joined Penn Mutual/1847Financial, I hoped it would be a long-term fit, and it’s proven to be just that. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to grow in my role and I’m really grateful for that journey.
Tell us about your journey and the roles you’ve had?
I started as a receptionist with very little experience in financial services. As time went on, I learned more about life insurance, investments and new business processing. Eventually, I took on the role of an operations specialist, which required a lot of training on registered products and processes. Now, I handle new business, serve as an executive assistant and help with recruiting. It’s a bit of everything!
What makes your firm stand out from others?
Our firm is unique in its personal touch. Here, we’re more than just coworkers – I’ve built real friendships. This supportive and collaborative environment makes work enjoyable, which is really special. It feels less like a job and more like a place where you genuinely want to be.
How do you support financial professionals in your role?
My goal is to be the go-to support person for our financial professionals, handling everything from paperwork to answering any questions they might have. By taking care of these details, I free up more of their time so they can focus on what truly matters—meeting with and supporting their clients. Financial professionals are incredibly busy and having someone they can rely on makes all the difference in helping them maximize their time and impact.
How do you support your firm’s recruiting efforts?
My role in recruiting is all about organization and finding the right fit. I maintain detailed records to ensure we follow up with potential recruits at the right time—sometimes months after an initial conversation. I also work with LinkedIn Sales Navigator, helping to identify candidates who match our office’s specific needs. Since each office might look for different qualities in a recruit, I work on tailoring search filters and refining our recruiting approach. My goal is to stay organized, adaptable and always on the lookout for new ways to make our recruiting process as efficient and effective as possible.
What advice would you give to financial professionals considering a move to a new firm?
Ask questions – lots of them! When you’re exploring a new firm, make a list of what’s most important to you and ask about each item. Sometimes the “grass is greener” pitch can gloss over specifics, so dig deep to ensure you’re making the best decision for you and your clients.
Do you have any stories of how financial products have helped clients?
Sadly, we’ve seen cases where clients have lost a loved one, but because of careful planning, they were financially secure during a challenging time. It’s moments like these that remind you how impactful financial planning can be in helping people maintain stability when they need it most.
What’s a piece of advice or motto that guides you?
“Be the person you want to work with.” I try to be friendly, respectful and always willing to help. A positive attitude is contagious and I believe it’s essential in creating a supportive workplace.
Lastly, what do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I love reading, boating, fishing and spending time with my family, especially my niece and nephew. I also enjoy going on fun adventures with friends.
